ABSTRACT

This eclectic edition of The Botanic Garden pairs the first lifetime editions of the respective parts (1EV1792 and 1LP1789). Transcriptions were made from the British Library copies digitized in Eighteenth-Century Collections Online; and checked against physical copies held in the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, the Library of Congress, and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, Austin. A clear reading text is presented, with apparatus limited to Darwin’s own (unnumbered) footnotes. The placement and text of the Advertisement corresponds to 1EV1792 (the first time EV was paired with LP) rather than to 1LP1789 (the first time the Advertisement appeared). Material appended to the first editions has been incorporated into the main text where Darwin’s intentions to this effect can be inferred (e.g., from the heading “Verses omitted by mistake”). Especially long Additional Notes and Supplements to 1LP1789 have been left as back matter, however, as they were by Darwin in subsequent editions.
