ABSTRACT

Culture refers to the total physical, psychosocial, and sociopolitical lifeway of a group of people. It includes the technological resources utilized by them, their dress, housing, means of production and transportation. Cultural lifeways differ in their methods of child raising and education, their means of assigning social role and status, their ways of organizing and governing themselves, and their closely held values and attitudes. Cultural elements, such as skill in technological areas, valued endeavors and status, tend to be integrated internally with each other. In regard to psychoactive substances, choice and pattern of substance use tend to be related to valued psychological states and experiences, economic forces, community values, laws and law enforcement.
