ABSTRACT

Undergraduate business and management education preceded all other forms of university and college education, and it helped to shape the programs offered at the graduate and college levels in Canada. This chapter examines the development of undergraduate business and management programs at three universities: the University of British Columbia (UBC), the University of Western Ontario (UWO), and Ecole des hautes etudes commerciales de Montreal (HEC). In terms of organization, the first Canadian universities such as the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario-were intentionally modelled on universities in the United Kingdom like Oxford and Cambridge, with students assigned to individual colleges within a wider structure. English Canadian graduate programs also had a significant role in educating HEC faculty, as several faculty had earned degrees in graduate programs at institutions like the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario.
