ABSTRACT

A large majority of students are likely to possess a smartphone, and many of them have access to some kind of tablet device. The built-in facilities in iPhones and iPads can be enormously helpful to students, perhaps especially those with dyslexia. The key here is to regard the device as a mobile computer. The aim is to make a list of words that students use frequently in the different subjects that they study. This method should help them to remember the spelling and the meaning of the words. Read&Write from Texthelp is a very useful program to support literacy in many ways, but it crucially has an element/app which can support students in the reading section of the language paper, where a human reader is not allowed. Read&Write seems to be especially prevalent in universities, and so schools might want to take a good look at this program to prepare students for life beyond the sixth form.
