The logical value of conformity to experience may, however, be blended with the two previously mentioned virtues of economy and unity, which then become, not purely formal excellences of our speaking, but of that speaking as applied to empirical material. There is therefore no discrepancy between the most sincere realism and an approach through logical values. The metaphysician is a man pursuing economy, systematic simplicity, conformity to experience and the other logical values, with far more devotion and consistency than an ordinary speaker thinks necessary or possible. Very often the one-sided pursuit of certain logical values and neglect of others, has led philosophers into much greater nonsense and confusion than are ever found in ordinary language. Truth, so spoken of, becomes a thing beyond the range of human preferences and valuations, and therein quite unlike our moral and aesthetic values, which have the closest connection with our likes and preferences.
