ABSTRACT
Thisstudyisconcernedwithcertainkindsofwh-clauses,whose interpretationsareeasilyand,Iwillargue,plausiblyrenderedbya logicosemanticanalysisonwhichwh-phrasestranslateasopensentences,thatis,asexpressionsofthesemanticallyinterpretedrepresentationwhichcontainfreevariables.Theevidenceformyanalysisis drawnalmostentirelyfromEnglish,thoughIbrieflycitedatasuggestingtheanalysiscarriesovertoJapaneseaswell,andthesameholdsfor German,asIhavegatheredfromdiscussionswithanumberofnative speakers(thoughIdonotreporttheevidencehere);Iamthusreasonablyconfidentthatthebasicformoftheanalysisisofquitegenereral relevancetothelinguisticissuesraisedbyit.
