ABSTRACT

Moreover, scientists in principle aim at being objective; this discourages the formation of confusing clusters of associations round their words. The only scientific words that inevitably become heavily laden with emotional associations are words that stand for things or phenomena which may affect human life and happiness; there is more emotion attached to, say, uranium or penicillin than to heliun1 or ferrous oxide. The scientist is, however, always trying, consciously, to make his language as unambiguous, as objective, as precise as possible. He quite often uses mathematical symbols and formulae, which are even more foolproof than scientific words -provided that one can understand them.
