ABSTRACT
T HE first four chapters of this book have already shown that saying what we mean is not as easy as it sounds and that the meaning of most words is open to doubt, depending on such things as knowledge, context, association and background. On the whole, the tnore abstract a word is the more likely are semantic difficulties, unless the abstract word is also a highly technical one like son1e tern1s of philosophy and the sciences.
