ABSTRACT

This chapter starts by focusing on the current strategic human resource management/high performance work systems (SHRM/HPWS) research and publications in China. It discusses selection of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and domestic private enterprises (DPEs) from the Chinese indigenous enterprise ownership models, research design by using a mixed-method of both qualitative and quantitative analysis, interviewee profiles and survey targets, as well as an explanation of interview questions and the survey questionnaire. Studies in recent years on SHRM/HPWS have expanded their scope beyond the historical focus on the US and Western systems. A number of research projects have tested the applicability of SHRM in other social/cultural environments. The SOEs and DPEs are characterized as Chinese indigenous enterprises with relatively low influence of Western management theory, in comparison with foreign multinational companies, joint ventures and foreign invested enterprises. The chapter provides detailed information about these two-stage research activities.
