ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the everyday life experiences of children at an early age then map out how progress is structured for primary-age children by the National Curriculum in England (NCE). Activities that allow children to explore and play with a range of materials, together with careful questioning by adults, will help them appreciate some of the properties of the materials and develop their vocabulary. Natural objects are identified by children as not having been subjected to any manufacturing process; however, the term 'manufactured' is notable by its absence from their classifications. Classroom management should be considered – while a whole-class introduction is worthwhile, small groups working to handle and sort their collection allows for greater participation. The chapter emphasises developing conceptual understanding and the role of working scientifically. It explores the relationship of concepts and skills with example by considering how simple tests can be planned and carried out by pupils to determine a range of properties of materials.
