ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how and what children are learning in Montessori settings from birth to the age of twelve with a focus on early childhood. The chapter provides links with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and outlines how children’s learning is shared with parents. Montessori teachers are facilitators of children’s learning. They work with parents and the wider community to ensure that learning is relevant and appropriate for each child. By preparing the learning environment, they ensure that children are provided with tools for all aspects of their development. The principles of the EYFS are closely aligned with those of Montessori pedagogy. The Montessori approach recognises that learning needs to meet developmental needs as well as the interests of the child. The activities on offer in Montessori nurseries provide children with opportunities to work towards the early learning goals. The Montessori approach recognises the importance of imagination as a unique characteristic of human beings.
