ABSTRACT

Sentenceswithprepositionalphrases(hereafterPPs)provideseveraltests forthecoreferencerestrictionIproposedinChapter2andfortherelevanceofc-commandsyntacticdomainsingeneral.Wesawthatinthese cases,theprecede-and-commanddefinitionofdomainhasfailedmost impressively,preciselybecauseinthesestructuresthedomainsdefined bythealternativedefinitions(precede-and-commandvs.c-command) areclearlydistinct.Inthepreviouschapter,Imentionedsomeclear examplesofsententialandverb-phrasalPPs.However,sentenceswith PPsareparticularlyinteresting,sincemanyofthemprovidewhatlooks likecoreferencemysteries:sentenceswhichlookidenticalsyntactically differintheircoreferenceoptions,and,furthermore,thesamePPinthe samesentencemaybehavedifferentlywithrespecttocoreferenceifit islengthened.Suchmysterieshaveledseveralscholarstobelievethat therecanbenogrammaticalaccountofcoreferenceinsentenceswith PPs(oringeneral),andthattheyshouldbefacedwithperformance constraints(Wasow,1972)orpurelysemanticrestrictionsintermsof presuppositions(Bickerton,1975).
