ABSTRACT

Inourdiscussionofanaphorawehaveassumedgeneralconditionsthat restrictanaphorainterpretation,regardlessofthesemanticnatureof theantecedent,andonestricterconditiondeterminingtheinterpretation ofpronounsasboundvariables,which,asIpresenteditsofar,applies whentheantecedentisaquantifiedNPorawh-trace.Theinterpretation ofR-pronounssharespropertieswiththatofboundanaphora,(both sincetheyareinterpretableasboundvariablesandsincetheyobeythe boundanaphoracondition),but,ontheotherhand,itappliestoallcases involvingR-pronouns,regardlessofthesemanticsoftheantecedent,so inthissenseitmaybeviewedaspartofthegeneralconditionsonanaphora.Thegeneralconditionsarethenstatedinsumin(I),where(1a) istheanaphoraconditionproposedoriginallyinReinhart(1976)and (1b-e)arerecentadaptationsofthereciprocalruleandthedisjoint referenceruleproposedinChomsky(1973):

(1a)Anon-pronominalNPmustbeinterpretedasnon-coreferential withanyNPthatc-commandsit.(Thisentailsthatapronoun mustbeinterpretedasnon-coreferentialwithanyfullNPit c-commands.)

(b)Areflexiveorreciprocalpronoun(anR-pronoun)mustbeinterpretedascoreferentialwith(andonlywith)ac-commanding NPwithinaspecifiedsyntacticdomain(e.g.itsminimalgoverningcategory).
