ABSTRACT

Theextrasententialordiscoursecompetencewhichprovidesspeakersofalan-

guagewithknowledgeaboutlanguageuse,thatis,knowledgeoftheappropriatenessof

somegrammaticallywell-formedsentenceinaparticularcontext,hascometobecalled

pragmaticcompetence.Giventheexistenceofsuchcompetence,itremainsforusnot

onlytodescribeit,butalso,onamoretheoreticallevel,tosituateitwithrespecttoother

typesofknowledge.Anumberofpossibilitiessuggestthemselves,rangingfromthe

viewthatpragmaticcompetenceisnotlinguistic,andderivesfromotherhumancog-

nitiveorsocialabilities,totheviewthatpragmaticcompetenceisaslinguisticas,say,

semanticcompetence,andmustthereforebeexplicitlyincorporatedintoourtheoryof

language.Suchviewsassumeaunitarypragmaticcompetence;however,asresearchin

pragmaticsdevelops,itwillbecomeincreasinglypossibletoidentifyandclassifythe

varioustypesofextra-semanticcontributionstoutteranceinterpretation.
