ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on research aiming to enhance intelligence. It examines if each of the various processes involved in the four-fold architecture can be trained, if the results of training are stable in time, and if they transfer across processes. Research suggests that training is possible. All processes improve with systematic training; some of the gains are lost with time, but much of them remain. Transfer is possible, and it occurs according to the relations between the processes involved. Top-down transfer, from general to specific processes, is much more likely than bottom-up transfer, from specific to general processes. The royal road to transfer is training cognizance and relational thought. Training of these processes transfers to executive control processes, such as attention control and working memory. Learning is phase sensitive. To succeed it must take into account the present state of thought of the person involved. To be sustainable, it must recycle to upgrade each phase’s core cognizance and relational thought processes.
