      ABSTRACT

The final chapter in this volume presents a discussion of the important themes presented earlier and how they interact and how one might address them all in research, practice, and policy. The discussion begins with how motivational factors change over time both within an individual as well as within a group or society. The notion of communities of learners previously discussed along with social networks is then linked to various motivational factors. A holistic approach to learning is again emphasized as opposed to the temptation to focus on only one simple or static motivational factor. Applications are then presented in several contexts to show that what has been presented in this volume can be and has been implemented with some success. The final section again emphasizes the need for more research on educational motivation.
