ABSTRACT

The empirical findings from the four case studies provide rich material to understand the rationale in China’s diplomatic initiatives taken with its riparian neighbours. In this chapter, we investigate China’s interactive behaviour developed as a result of its sharing rivers with its neighbours. The contextual diversity of the case studies is reflected. Then a comparison is made of China’s water diplomacy and its varying levels of diplomatic cooperation in the four river basins. Part of this comparative analysis is to investigate how different interests that impact on China’s development of water diplomacy have been articulated. The research questions are answered and conclusions drawn on the features, rationale and outcomes of China’s water diplomacy.
