ABSTRACT

The world the public sees through the mass media's eyes is not a mirror image of reality, nor a true picture of events, people, places and issues. The media's news window on the world is, instead, a reflection of the media's own construction of reality. 1

The media provide their own account of reality, a pseudo-environment of "a background and setting in which a few objects and selected attributes are highlighted.,,2 Therefore, the information presented in the media, and the importance the media attach to this information, can be interpreted as the media's agenda of what is important.
