WecannotplungeintoadiscussionofthemorespecificworkthatfollowedFriedrichSchlegel'sr8o8bookwithoutlookingfirstattwocrucialtrendswhichlefttheirmarkonthelinguisticworkofthisperiod, inGermanyaboveall,butelsewhereaswell:historicismandorganicism. Thetwomovementspervadethewholeofcontemporaryintellectuallife; hereweshallfocusonlanguageonlyandshalluseSchlegel's1808work asoneofourstartingpoints.Weshallthentumtoabriefdiscussion ofthelinksbetweenthe'newlinguistics'andcontemporaryscience.
