ABSTRACT
When a person speaks or writes, he uses words and expressions that perform certain functions when communicating and interacting with other people. Communicatively, his utterances can function as questions, promises, statements, and so forth; interactionally, they may, for instance, lead to an answer, a satisfied smile, or a request for further information. In so expressing his intentions, the speaker (or writer) performs various sorts of speech acts. 1
