ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a number of best practice engagement methodologies that have been used across a broad range of industry sectors. Good safety representatives works with the organisation and the staff they represent to improve workplace standards. The safety champion programme is a variation on the safety representative concept. Its primary aim is to provide frontline manager with another pair of hands to help them manage safety at their location. A member of a risk assessment team presented an assessment following an incident to consider the task of moving two roll cages at the same time. It was explained that the operative was pushing one cage while pulling the other. Safety award programmes are implemented on the basis of psychological theory relating to reward and punishment. Frontline employees and their line managers are the third and final piece in any health and safety engagement strategy. Safety committees have only limited capacity to influence employee engagement, so other measures are needed.
