ABSTRACT

Health and safety should be enabling activities to take place through finding different ways to do things safely with sensible risk management. Moving away from traditional roots and becoming more commercially 'savvy' is critical if profession is to survive and develop. No organisation in its right mind wants to hurt people. They therefore want well-rounded, professional general business managers who specialise in health and safety to help them improve their safety performance and culture not people with clipboards and cagoules! The negative perception public has of health and safety is actually quite useful. For one's organisation's safety culture to develop positively, the whole area of health and safety must become ingrained into how organisation operates. In terms of getting the 'biggest bang for one's buck', one could do worse than developing a safety strategy that has clear and strong links with the organisation's overall aims and objectives. That way, safety is seen as really being keys to the organisation's success.
