ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests some ways of overcoming inaction at all levels of an organisation. They are mainly based on thinking about things differently and being more 'savvy'. Engaging the unengaged is probably the hardest challenge safety professional's face and there's no one sure-fire way of succeeding. Safety professionals are taught with three reasons why health and safety should be taken seriously: legal obligations placed on employers and individuals, moral considerations, and financial benefits in managing health and safety effectively. Laws are created to make people do something and are enforceable by various agencies and penalties. Justifying health and safety actions on financial grounds is a far better solution to the problem, but even then it's still very easy to be too simplistic about making the commercial argument. Less experienced safety professionals often make the mistake of complicating everything, either by devising a convoluted safety system or by making people complete reams of paperwork.
