ABSTRACT

Questioning in a creative music making (CMM) session means raising questions, but it also means thinking, discussing, assessing, contemplating, and evaluating those questions. The questioning step might begin with questions introduced at first by the facilitator. In a short time these questions can be raised and addressed directly by participants as they become internalized and self-directed, without any prodding from the facilitator. Music is valued around the world for its ability to enrich people's lives. One of the greatest powers of music is the power to affect emotion and mood. When one player describes a mood or emotion, the questioning can proceed to identify exactly what qualities in the music evoked such a response, it is the fast tempo that made the music exciting. More commonly, musical understanding is derived from words that are sung or spoken as part of the music. Musical meaning can only be determined by individual listeners as each one reflects inward intuitively or rationally and responds emotionally.
