ABSTRACT

Mixed instrumentation is generally preferred in creative music making (CMM), because it enables the participants to learn about instruments other than their own. It can help players to grow 'outside the box' beyond the technical limitations and the practical concerns of their own instruments. Because CMM is intended to be useful for musicians on any instrument, not just percussion, an invitation was extended to other instrumentalists at University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music (UMKC). It is recommended that the musical examples on the enclosed CD be played at the times indicated while reading the text. The intention in presenting these transcriptions is to convey a better sense of the CMM process to the reader through involvement, however indirect, in a real event as it actually occurred. The afternoon session was two hours long and it began with a summary description of CMM. By the end of this two-hour session all of reader has played in an improvisation.
