ABSTRACT

Creative music making (CMM) is a method of finding and remaining in contact with the inner musician the spirit that was touched by the expressive power of music in the first place. First and foremost, it is the career-track music students who can benefit from CMM sessions on a regular basis. The music in the free-form improvisation is performed by Eastman summer session 2002 participants Ya-ting Lee and Huei-hsien Wang on piano, and Jin Kim Soo on violin. Free-form improvisation can be a means of expanding an already established musical vocabulary. Amateur musicians can certainly gain important music-making perspectives from regular CMM sessions. CMM can enable the amateur musician, even without a high degree of technical skill, to achieve a level of musical expression in performance comparable to that of professional musicians. Novice musicians of any age can also participate in CMM. One kind of marimba, the home made amadinda, is ideal for novice and professional musicians alike in CMM.
