ABSTRACT
THE SOCIAL The theory does not tell us that we must have houses, or factories, or schools, or nation-states. Rather, it says that we must have places, and whatever they are, they will have this loomlike quality and should be used according to the criteria of intrinsic judgments. To offer a list of what types of places would or could be good, is to close off our creative potential as place-makers, and to run counter to the intent of intrinsic judgments. Even with this openness in possibilities, there still will be some underlying relationships (among the ones discussed in Chapter 2) that can be expected simply because of the structure and dynamics of place. The one I will focus on here is the problem of scale, for it has much to say in the subsequent discussions on democracy and the economy.
