ABSTRACT
As suggested earlier, there was much at stake in how we organized our one-day workshop on Islam, and that organization had something to do with a quest for timeless origins. For instance, consider how all this was phrased in a book that was suggested for the students to read:
If the principles of Islam were followed, every Muslim would treat every other Muslim like a brother; in fact, they have been attacking one another almost since the founding of the faith. (Lippman 1995, ix; emphasis added)
