ABSTRACT
Post-processual archaeology has stressed theory-building and synthesis. Based on a dialectic which holds that the interpretation of data (including history and literary sources) mediates as an analogy between past and present as distant and recent sources of experience and understanding, Hodder (1992:178–9) has suggested that this process involves both observation and theoretical reconstruction in creative tension contributing to both past and present.
