ABSTRACT

Children have the right to a standard of living that supports their full development, and adequate housing is essential to this. Children are disproportionately affected by many environmental stressors. Their capacity to tolerate pollution and toxins is lower, they are more vulnerable to disease, and their propensity for injury is higher. Home is the primary environment for children's early social and intellectual development. The level of crowding, access to outdoor space, opportunities for withdrawal, space to play with other children, all contribute to a child's social identity and understanding. The easy availability of safe and sufficient water supplies is important not only for children's health, but for easing the burden of daily life in conditions of poverty. In order to promote safety and health, encourage hygienic habits in children, and simplify the demands of child care, it critical that latrines be close by, and designed to accommodate young children.
