ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the impact of modernity and postmodernity has been so great that it has now become hard to claim there is much secrecy left in esotericism. It uses esotericism, which refers to secret religions and/or religions attempting to discover the secrets of the universe, as a case study to illustrate how changes at a larger scale in society can also impact on the most hidden religious groups. The move of esotericism in modernity and postmodernity would have re-enchanted parts of the western world. According to Faivre esotericism became a marginal phenomenon by the end of the seventeenth century. In the McDonaldised culture, esoteric knowledge appears to have become hyper-real. The McDonaldisation of Occult Culture is a process defined by Koenig and its central quality is fragmentation of knowledge. The Internet, which uses as a case study, appears to be a strong medium for this type of knowledge and could be argued to be an element of Techno-Magick.
