ABSTRACT

In a certain town there lived an officer with his wife. Once they sent him on business to another town for a long period of time. Living there he became acquainted with a widow who had a beautiful daughter. The girl was most pleasing to him and he started courting her, and he tried to persuade her to begin a love affair with him. She wouldn' t agree. Then he began trying to get her to marry him. Before she would marry him, she asked whether he wasn't already married. He answered in the negative. She obliged him to swear to it. He swore in the name of some three saints. The wedding took place in one of the town churches. The young people visited her mother. The whole business affair was ended and the officer had to return home. He took his leave of his mother-in-law, took his young wife, and rode away. On the way he confessed to her that he was married. The young thing burst into tears and reproached him for

his deceit. He offered her a condition: if she wanted to ride on with him, he would call her his servant. Despite the insult, she agreed out of her love. They arrive home. His legal wife greeted the officer joyfully, but she was amazed when she saw the young girl from far away. He explained that on the road, he had hired this servant, and the second wife confirmed this. And so they began living.
