ABSTRACT

The matchmaker saw a host of devils and they were all eating, some bread, some soft cheese, some radishes, but they all had a lot. He saw there that devil who had given them the horse, and he was eating a whole pig. He saw the man and said, "So I pinched this pig at that wedding of yours and now I've eaten my fill. Never mind how many times I've gone there, I never was able to take anything. Once I was walking along hungry, poking my head in here and there, but I couldn't get anything, it was all under the sign of the cross. An old woman who lives at that landlord's was carrying a pot of that soft cheese, so I tripped her and she fell. The pot broke and the cheese spilled out. But then she started crossing everything, so I took fright and ran away. That horse I gave you was to take revenge on the landlord. The matchmaker looked and looked at the devils, then he noticed that they ate everything that hadn't been crossed or blessed by people, so he went home. Soon the landlord died and the groom invited the matchmaker to live with him, and they lived and were happy, but the matchmaker wouldn't ever let the devil take anything. So now he and his old woman cross and bless everything. And the bride became an exemplary mistress and got rid of all her old nasty ways.
