ABSTRACT

Visual simulations are visual representations of something else and take many forms, such as photographs, maps, and models. The most up-to-date manual is Sheppard's Visual Simulation, which is a user's guide for design and planning professionals. This chapter provides new perspectives and applications on scale models and computer graphics, augmenting other parts of this chapter which discuss maps, drawings, and photographs. The use of photographs of connecting spaces enabled the development of personal comparisons between spatial features and judgments about the appearance and quality of particular walkways, corridors, and paths. Movement patterns and individual perceptions have also been the subject of studies in which responses have been recorded while actually moving through the urban environment. This approach, as well as the photographic simulation of spatial sequences, may likewise be useful for research purposes and as educational tools. The results of both approaches have proven to be an effective way of awakening people's interest in spatial characteristics of the environment.
