ABSTRACT

Hazlitt, Political Essays (1819); review by Edward Jacob or William Gifford, Quarterly Review, XXII (July 1819), 158–163. [Issue appeared November 1819.] The “one other” whom Hazlitt praises (p. 160) would seem to be Byron. The allusion to “Poor Tom” (p. 162) is to Edgar’s mad speeches in King Lear. The reference to another of Hazlitt’s publications “in which he is more than commonly ridiculous” (p. 162) is to Hazlitt’s Letter to William Gifford, Esq. (also alluded to on p. 159). Apparently Hazlitt was getting under Gifford’s skin.
