ABSTRACT

Shelley, The Cenci (1819); Literary Gazette, April 1, 1820, pp. 209–210. The Literary Gazette — or some of its regular contributors — spent a good deal of energy trying to fight the polluting influence of “noisome and noxious” publications. Apparently this reviewer — perhaps the Rev. George Croly — was so shocked by the subject matter and characters in The Cenci that he was unwilling to attempt to comprehend Shelley’s own moral condemnation of them. No. 167. SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 1820. PRICE 1s.
