ABSTRACT

Godwin, Caleb Williams (1794); review by William Enfield, Monthly Review, 2nd Series, XV (Sept. 1794), 145–149. Enfield (1741–97) taught (with Dr. Aikin) at the famous dissenting academy at Warrington. He became a close friend and adviser of Griffiths. The review of Caleb Williams shows Enfield perceptive in analyzing the central issues and particularities of Godwin’s novel and relatively tolerant in characterizing the ideas with which he clearly disagreed.
