ABSTRACT

Godwin, The Enquirer (1797); review by William Enfield, Monthly Review, 2nd Series, XXIII (July 1797), 291–302. Enfield continues his cautiously favorable examination of Godwin’s ideas. Alexander Gerard (1728–95), a Scottish professor of philosophy, published his Essay on Genius in 1774. The noted geniuses Enfield names are James “The Admirable” Crichton (1560–85), William Crotch (1775–1847, who first performed publicly on the organ at age four), and Jedidiah Buxton (1707–72, a farm laborer who could do prodigious mathematical calculations). Only Crichton has retained his fame.
