ABSTRACT

Hunt, Story of Rimini (1816); Monthly Review, 2nd Series, LXXX (June 1816), 138–147. The Orphan, mentioned frequently in this review, is a tragedy by Thomas Otway (1680); Miss O’Neill (p. 142) is Eliza O’Neill, the foremost young woman tragedian of the day, for whom Shelley designed the role of Beatrice Cenci. The Monthly Review not only agrees with some of Hunt’s poetic theories, but claims (p. 144) to have advocated similar doctrines “for some time past.”
