ABSTRACT
The BRIGHTON MAGAZINE, which appeared monthly from January through August 1822, was published at London, not at the Sussex resort made fashionable by the Prince Regent (by this date George IV). The journal’s title implies, therefore, both an attempt to cultivate a fashionable readership and an allegiance to established political and religious standards. The magazine’s reviewers exhibit a zealous orthodoxy of the proto-Victorian variety.
