ABSTRACT

Godwin, Mandeville (1817); British Review, XI (Feb. 1818), 108-120. The critic retrospectively reviews Caleb Williams in addition to Mandeville. The legal authority mentioned on page 118 is Francis Hargrave of Liverpool (?1741-1821). Note that in the discussion of Godwin’s figures of speech and diction (pp. 118-120), examples from Byron are introduced. William Roberts was a lawyer, as well as the editor and Byron critic of the British Review. He may well have written this review.
