ABSTRACT

Hunt, Foliage (1818); Eclectic Review, 2nd Series, X (Nov. 1818), 484–493. Hunt’s nearly one year and a half of close association with Shelley inspired him to state his religious opinions more openly — with unfortunate results so far as his acceptance by the Christian liberals was concerned. The passage quoted (pp. 487–488) from the master of the Lake School is Wordsworth’s Excursion, IV, 851–887. “The Nymphs” was praised by Shelley, who undoubtedly modeled “The Cloud” on the song of the Nephelaids (eclipsing Hunt’s original execution on the theme). Foliage was dedicated to Sir John Edward Swinburne (p. 493), one of Hunt’s patrons and the grandfather of Algernon Swinburne.
