ABSTRACT

[Byron] Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte (1814); Theatrical Inquisitor, IV (May 1814), 286289. After (mis)quoting from Pope’s Essay on Criticism (lines 418ff.), the critic shows himself to be a pro-Bonapartist. William Thomas Fitzgerald (?1759–1829) is cited (p. 287) as the epitome of the hack poet, turning out verses on every public occasion.
