ABSTRACT

Byron, Childe Harold, IV (1818); New Monthly Magazine, X (Sept. 1818), 156–160. Though this journal had failed to notice Childe Harold, III, Manfred, and other volumes by Byron, the competition afforded by Constable’s Scot’s Magazine (revived as the Edinburgh Magazine) and Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, as well as the new weekly Literary Gazette forces the New Monthly not only to notice Byron’s works but to review and give lengthy excerpts from them.
