Byron, The Prophecy of Dante (1821); New Monthly Magazine, 2nd Series, I (1821), 725-728. There is no month given because this review, like those of Heaven and Earth and The Island (below), appeared in undated supplementary volumes entitled “Original Papers.” Thomas Campbell and Cyrus Redding — both friendly to Byron — decided that the New Monthly would not review Marino Faliero, perhaps because they could not have it reviewed favorably. Instead, the “Prophecy of Dante,” which is appended to Marino Faliero, receives substantial, if not ecstatic, attention.
