ABSTRACT

Byron, Sardanapalus [etc.] (1821); Literary Gazette, Dec. 22, 1821, pp. 808-812; Dec. 29, 1821, pp. 821-822; Jan. 5, 1822, pp. 4-5. Notice that in the reviewer’s list of great infidel writers (p. 808), he groups Shelley with John Toland, Bishop Berkeley, and Thomas Paine. From various remarks in the review of Cain, it seems likely that the critic is a clergyman, and probably, therefore, the Rev. George Croly.
