ABSTRACT

Byron, Childe Harold, I–II (1812); review by ?C. Dallas, Literary Panorama, XI (March 1812), 417–430. In column 417, Paul Whitehead (1710–1774) is not to be confused with his contemporary William Whitehead (1715–1785), who was Poet Laureate. It is not clear to me whether or not “C. Dallas,” identified as the reviewer here, was actually Robert Charles Dallas, miscellaneous writer and Byron’s early friend and literary mentor. If so, the fact that he was the man most responsible for encouraging Byron to publish Childe Harold may explain the enthusiastic praise in this review.
