ABSTRACT

Wordsworth, Peter Bell (1819); Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, V (May 1819), 130–136. Among the reviews of Peter Bell, this stands out as one of the few that shows an understanding of Wordsworth’s purpose and method. And yet several sentences, including the final reference to the supposed popular success of Christabel, may well carry ironic overtones. The reviewer should be either Wilson or possibly De Quincey, whom Wilson attempted to enlist early but whose first contributions are shrouded in obscurity.
