ABSTRACT

Wordsworth, Thanksgiving Ode (1816); Dublin Examiner, II (Nov. 1816), 18–25. On page 19, the allusion to “St. Paul of Abbotsford” is to Scott as the anonymous author of Paul’s Letters to His Kinsfolk (1816), who had written a poem on The Field of Waterloo (1815). Joanna Southcott (ca. 1750–1814) was a religious fanatic and prophetess who had prophesied just before her death that she would give birth to Shiloh, the Prince of Peace.
