ABSTRACT

Wordsworth, The White Doe of Rylstone (1815); review by Josiah Conder, Eclectic Review, 2nd Series, V (Jan. 1816), 33–45. Notice especially Conder’s evaluation of Scott’s poetry (p. 34) and the critique of the Metaphysical Poets (pp. 35–36), which prepare the reader for Conder’s dislike of the “mystical” elements of the poem. The author of The Isle of Palms (p. 39) was John Wilson, the “Christopher North” of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine.
